Exercise 2.1

Find a scene that has depth. From a fixed position, take a sequence of five or six shots at different focal lengths without changing your viewpoint. (You might like to use the specific focal lengths indicated on the lens barrel.)

This exercise really demonstrates the power of the camera lens, for this exercise I used a Canon EOS 5D mark IV full frame camera with a 24-70mm lens. It was set to aperture priority with the ISO set at 200, the first focal length I used was 24mm then 28mm, 35mm, 42mm, 50mm, 60mm and 70mm. I focused on the same spot for each image, I noticed that the shutter  speed changed subtly when I altered the focal length allowing slightly more light into the composition.

When you play the images in sequence they really give an advancing effect as if you  are traveling along the pathway.

The images which appeared closest to what my eye could see were the two captured using the 35mm and the 43mm focal lengths.

Zooming in doesn’t change the appearance of things if it is viewed from the same viewpoint.

In the final image the pathway path seems much shorter than it actually was. The point where I was standing, the foreground became very compressed and slightly out of focus, omitting a large section that was apparent in the first image. I could also see a slight distortion of the straight lines, they appear to be bowing inwards.
